NTBackup for Windows XP Home Edition

If you are a user of Windows XP Home Edition, then the Microsoft Backup Utility is most likely not installed on your computer by default. You need to install the Backup Utility manually using the Windows Home Edition CD-ROM.

To check whether the Backup Utility is installed, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories and then point to System Tools. If you can see the Backup item in the System Tools menu, then the Backup Utility is already installed and no further action is necessary.

If you cannot find Backup in the System Tools menu, follow the instructions below.

  1. Insert Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  2. Find the Ntbackup.msi file on the CD-ROM in the \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
  3. Double-click the Ntbackup.msi file to start the Backup installer.
  4. When the installation is complete, click Finish.

For more information, refer to HOW TO: Install Backup from the CD-ROM in Windows XP Home Edition.

If you do not have the Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM, please see the list of frequently asked questions.
