Firestreamer-RM Wrapper - Media Management

The Media Management page allows you to control the media allocation policy.

Overwrite unrecognized media Unconditionally overwrites the media that contains a failed backup or has not been used with Firestreamer-RM before.

Examples:
  • The option is checked; the current media is a blank DVD disk. RESULT: The media will be used for the backup.
  • The option is checked; the current media is an Iomega REV disk written with third party software. RESULT: The media will be overwritten and used for the backup.
  • The option is unchecked; the current media is a blank DVD disk. RESULT: The media will not be used.
Overwrite expired media Overwrites the media on which the last backup set is older than the specified number of days. Used in conjunction with Maximum backup set age.
Maximum backup set age The maximum age for the last backup set on a piece of media, in days; used in conjunction with Overwrite expired media.

When set to 0, the maximum age is controlled by the MaxOverwriteAgeMinutes value (DWORD, in minutes) under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cristalink\Firestreamer-RM\CurrentVersion registry key (30 minutes by default).

Examples:

  • Overwrite expired media is checked; Maximum backup set age is set to 30; the last backup set on the current media was written 20 days ago. RESULT: The media will not be used.
  • Overwrite expired media is checked; Maximum backup set age is set to 7; the last backup set on the current media was written 8 days ago. RESULT: The media will be overwritten and used for the backup.
  • Overwrite expired media is checked; Maximum backup set age is set to 0; the last backup set on the current media was written two hours ago. RESULT: The media will be overwritten and used for the backup.
  • Overwrite expired media is unchecked; the current media has been previously used with Firestreamer-RM. RESULT: The media will not be used.
Append to media Appends the backup set to the current media, provided the media already contains a valid backup set and has the specified amount of free space available. Used in conjunction with Minimum free space.

Notes:

  • Overwrite expired media, if enabled, takes precedence over Append to media.
  • You can only append to the media if it is the first media in the current backup set. If the current backup requires more than a single piece of media, the additional media can only be overwritten.
Minimum free space The minimum amount of free space on the current media, in megabytes, to allow appending. Used in conjunction with Append to media.

Examples:

  • Append to media is checked; Minimum free space is set to 50; the current media has 250 MB of free space available. RESULT: The backup set will be appended to the media, provided the media is not overwritten due to the expiration.
  • Append to media is checked; Minimum free space is set to 50; the current media has 20 MB of free space available. RESULT: The media will not be used, unless overwritten due to the expiration.
  • Append to media is unchecked; the current media contains a backup. RESULT: The media will not be used, unless overwritten due to the expiration.
Enable media spanning Applies the Overwrite unrecognized media and Overwrite expired media options to the second and subsequent pieces of media. Usually, you need to select this option if the current backup requires more than a single piece of media.

IMPORTANT: This option only works if it takes more than two minutes to fill up a piece of backup media.

Eject media when done Ejects the media when the backup task succeeds.
