W003: The Hardware Write and Verify option might not be supported by the media drive

The immediately preceding write error was probably caused by the media drive not supporting the Hardware Write and Verify option. Disable the option and repeat the failed operation.

W004: The medium is write protected

The tape drive was unable to write to the medium because of any of the following reasons:

  • The medium was marked as read-only in the media map file.
  • The medium was write protected at the media drive level. For example, a file medium was located on a read-only network share, or a drive medium had the write protect tab in the locked position.
  • The trial period had expired. You need to purchase a license to continue using Firestreamer.
  • Firestreamer does not support writing to the medium (for example, the medium was DVD-R/RW as opposed to DVD+R/RW).
  • The media drive does not support writing to the medium (for example, a DVD-ROM drive contained a DVD+RW disc).
  • The medium was being used by another program.
  • The backup software attempted to overwrite previously recorded data on the write-once medium (for example, DVD+R).

The specific reason is usually given in the immediately preceding error message.

The media drive redirected the specified number of defective data blocks to the spare area. See also M023.

W012: Unable to extend the file medium: <error>

The tape drive was unable to increase the size of the file medium due to the specified error.

W013: The drive medium <mediumName> was being used by another process: <error>

The tape drive was unable to obtain exclusive access to the drive medium because the latter was being used by another process. The tape drive forcibly dismounted the storage volume associated with the medium in order to proceed.

The W013 message is generated by the Firestreamer drivers version 4.0.1 and later. The previous versions of the drivers produced the E026 message and returned an error condition to the backup software, which caused the current backup to fail. We recommend that you perform the troubleshooting steps listed for E026. However, if you were unable to identify the process that was using the drive medium, W013 can be ignored.

E001: Please purchase a license to use Firestreamer beyond the trial period

You need to purchase a license and install the license key to use Firestreamer beyond the 30-day trial period.

E002: The media drive reported the following error: <error>

The media drive reported the specified error. Any provided numeric error codes have meaning only to the manufacturer of the media drive. Usually, this message is displayed because of the following reasons:

  • The medium is defective.
  • The medium is not compatible with the media drive (this is a common case with DVD drives).
  • The media drive is faulty.

If the message relates to a file medium, then the following errors may be displayed:

  • The specified network name is no longer available. Error codes: C00000C9 (STATUS_NETWORK_NAME_DELETED), C000013B (STATUS_LOCAL_DISCONNECT), C000013B (STATUS_REMOTE_DISCONNECT), C000020B (STATUS_ADDRESS_CLOSED), C000020C (STATUS_CONNECTION_DISCONNECTED), C000020D (STATUS_CONNECTION_RESET).
This error indicates that Firestreamer was unable to access the file on a network location, which is usually caused by network problems. You may want to search the Internet for the above error message. For example, check the following articles: KB325487, KB961293.

E003: The current medium does not support writing at arbitrary locations

The backup software attempted either to overwrite previously recorded data on the write-once medium, or to write at a tape position which was not beginning-of-partition (BOP), end-of-data (EOD), or a frame boundary.

E004: There is not enough memory to complete an operation

Firestreamer was unable to obtain a required amount of memory. You may want to increase the amount of RAM in your computer, and to ensure that the other running programs are not using the memory inefficiently.

E012: Unable to write data to the medium

The tape drive was unable to transfer data from/to, or to locate data on the medium because of any of the following reasons:

  • The media drive reported a hardware error. The E002 message is also displayed in this case.
  • There was a non-hardware failure (for example, an insufficient memory condition).
  • The logical structure of the medium was corrupted (for example, because of a previously failed backup).

The medium name in the media map file was invalid due to the specified error.

E016: Unable to open the medium <mediumName>: <error>

The tape drive was unable to open the medium due to the specified error. Ensure that the medium name is valid.

If the message relates to a file medium, then the following errors may be displayed:

  • Access is denied. Error code: 0xC0000022 (STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED).
This error most likely indicates that the account the Firestreamer Helper Service is running under has insufficient rights to access the file. For more information, see File Media.
  • The system cannot find the file specified. Error code: 0xC0000034 (STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND).
You need to create a file medium before it can be loaded into a tape drive. For more information, see File Media.

The tape drive was unable to impersonate the Firestreamer Helper Service's account while opening the medium due to the specified error.

E025: Unable to insert the medium <mediumName> into a tape drive: <error>

The tape library was unable to insert the medium into a tape drive due to the specified error.

E026: The drive medium <mediumName> was being used by another process: <error>

The tape drive was unable to obtain exclusive access to the medium because the latter was being used by another process. To resolve the issue, follow the steps below:

  • Make sure you have closed all other programs (including Windows Explorer) which could access the media drive.
  • Try to assign a drive letter to the drive and open it in Windows Explorer to see if the drive is accessible.
  • Check the status of the drive in Windows Disk Management. The drive must not be marked as offline.
  • If you are logged on via Remote Desktop, try to log on locally to see if Windows is displaying a message related to the drive.
  • If the drive does not contain important data, try to reformat the drive in Windows Disk Management to see if the latter can lock the drive to perform the format operation.
