Firestreamer-RM Extends Functionality of Microsoft Backup Utility
and SQL Server Backup
Cristalink Limited announced the release of Firestreamer-RM 2.0,
software that extends the functionality of the Microsoft Backup Utility
(NTBackup) and Microsoft SQL Server Backup to a wide range of backup
media, including DVD, Iomega REV, HDD and flash memory. In addition
to the new media types, Firestreamer-RM provides such advanced features
as data compression and encryption, media and drive spanning, support
for remote drives, integration with Windows Automated System Recovery
and more.
Auckland, New Zealand -- August 8, 2005 -- Cristalink Limited announced
the release of Firestreamer-RM (Removable Media) 2.0, server grade
backup software for Microsoft Windows systems. Firestreamer-RM emulates
a virtual tape drive and seamlessly integrates with the Microsoft
Removable Storage, allowing the use of the Microsoft Backup Utility
(NTBackup) and Microsoft SQL Server Backup (SQLBackup) with a wide
range of backup media, including DVD, Iomega REV, hard disk drives,
flash memory and so on. In addition to the newly supported media
types, Firestreamer-RM extends the inherent benefits of Microsofts
backup software with data compression and encryption, media and drive
spanning, support for remote drives and integration with Windows
Automated System Recovery.
Firestreamer-RM writes data directly to backup media with no intermediate
file system or "burning engine" layers, which results in
reduced CPU usage and faster backups in comparison to conventional
backup software, let alone packet writing (Drive Letter Access) solutions.
The Firestreamer-RM media is presented as a separate media pool in
the Microsoft Removable Storage, eliminating the hassle of managing
.BKF (NTBackup) and .BAK (SQLBackup) files. Besides, to remove the
need to manually change the media during backup operations, Firestreamer-RM
offers the ability to span large backups across multiple pieces of
media and multiple media drives. The software also supports remote
media drives connected via TCP/IP with the iSCSI technology.
A huge advantage of Firestreamer-RM is that the most of the backup
job is performed by the native Microsoft backup software, which supports
the volume shadow copy and other advanced technologies, and is capable
to back up live Microsoft Windows Server systems, Microsoft Exchange
and Microsoft SQL Server databases. Firestreamer-RM is fully compatible
with Windows Automated System Recovery and allows a bare metal restore
in the event of a catastrophic system or hardware failure, when Windows
does not start correctly.
Firestreamer-RM supports data encryption using the US Federal Information
Processing Standard FIPS 197 Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).
The strength of the 256 bit key length of the AES algorithm is sufficient
to protect classified information up to the Top Secret level. To
promote confidence in Firestreamer-RM encryption, Cristalink Limited
has published on their website the source code that exposes the Firestreamer-RM
media data formats and encryption implementation details.
"The unique features of Firestreamer-RM make it attractive to
everyone who currently uses NTBackup and SQLBackup with tapes, but
is considering other storage media", says Nick Repin, Cristalink
CEO. "Firestreamer-RM offers painless transition from tape backups
to external HDD, DVD or Iomega REV drives, and allows to reuse all
the existing tape oriented backup scripts and procedures. Those already
using NTBackup and SQLBackup with non-tape media will benefit from
Firestreamer-RM compression, data encryption, media and drive spanning,
remote media drives and simply faster backups. If you are considering
low cost feature packed backup software for your Windows server,
desktop PC or laptop, Firestreamer-RM can be a viable option".
The software operates on Microsoft Windows 2000, XP and 2003 Server,
and is compatible with Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 and 2003.
Firestreamer-RM costs $30 USD for a single-computer license, and
may be ordered securely online. A fully functional version of the
software can be downloaded for a free 30-day trial from Firestreamer's
website at http://www.firestreamer.com.
