Hi,

I have a question about loading an old file in firestreamer, to use later in DPM2010 to restore data.

In our environment we have within DPM2010 a retention time of 7 days. So after 7 days a tape can be re-used.
Since it is a virtual tape the physical file containing the backup data is on a file share of another server.
These physical files are everyday copied/backupped to another system.

When we want to do an restore of data within these 7 days everything works fine the tape is available in the fileshare. BUT....
Now we want to restore an backup of about 3 months ago.

The physical files containing the current backups are:
\\fileshare\virtualTape\VirtTap_10000000001.fsrm containing backup data of 01-10-2011
\\fileshare\virtualTape\VirtTap_10000000002.fsrm containing backup data of 02-10-2011
\\fileshare\virtualTape\VirtTap_10000000003.fsrm containing backup data of 03-10-2011
etc.

The backup we need to restore with the correct data is an filename on a different location with the same name already exists.
D:\temp\VirtTap_10000000002.fsrm containing backup data of 15-07-2011

What is the best procedure to use this old backup file within DPM?
1. copy the file to the current location and replace the current file containing the backup of 02-10-2011
do a rescan or inventory in DPM to recognise the data within this file

or

2. edit within firestreamer the current location of the medium.
Firestreamer -> Media : action -> edit
locate the same Medium name \\fileshare\virtualTape\VirtTap_10000000002.fsrm
change the path in medium name.
the path points now to a different location where the old backup file is placed D:\temp\VirtTap_10000000002.fsrm
click on load media
unlock Door in DPM
continue in Firestreamer
lock the door in DPM
Now the tape is suspect in DPM

run a sql query the mark the tape as not suspect

DPM now shows tape as External DPM Tape.

or
3. ??????

thnx for the time and effort.

You shouldn't have used duplicate bar codes (file names) for media. We made every effort to prevent users from doing it, but you just created problems for yourself. Firestreamer itself doesn't care. It's DPM gets confused when it sees duplicate bar codes on different tapes. You should contact Microsoft Support and ask them. I guess you can resolve the suspect tape in DPM and then restore from it.

What you should do, create new tapes and load them after you unloaded and saved the old ones, so that you don't have two files with the same name but different content.
