Re: DPM 2010 + Firestreamer + Data Domain

I assume that you are using Firestreamer in file media mode, when a virtual tape corresponds to a .fsrm file. Firestreamer uses certain format to translate tape data stream to normal files, and with that format there's a file header, and there are block headers. If the Data Domain device tries to un...

Why is the performance so poor?

Firestreamer provides data transfer rates comparable to that of direct file copying to the destination medium. However, Firestreamer cannot transfer data any faster than the backup software and the storage medium will provide or consume it. In addition, any third-party software that interferes, for ...

Re: FireStreamer + DPM2010 + USB Drives + Weekly Rotations?

The scenario that you described should work. Firestreamer supports USB external drives. All the rest is up to Microsoft DPM. See What is the best backup strategy for my environment? for more info.

Re: Evaluating - questions

With Firestreamer 4.0, loading media into slots may not work with Backup Exec because the latter may not be able to move tapes from slots to tape drives. Try loading tapes directly into tape drives.

Firestreamer-RM does support file media, see http://www.cristalink.com/fsrm/hh.aspx?id=file.

Re: Compression question

If you were using the Firestreamer compression with file media on compressed drives, it would negatively affect the performance without increasing the compression ratio. In other words, the only result would be the higher CPU usage caused by the file system unsuccessfully trying to compress already ...

Re: Evaluating - questions

So you are using Firestreamer-RM with Backup Exec. Why don't you try file media? In that case, you can format your 9TB as a single partition, and create several .fsrm files (virtual tapes) there. It should be much more convenient than drive media. You can also try Firestreamer 4.0. I am not sure whe...

Re: Evaluating - questions

Are you asking about Firestreamer-RM 2.x (for NTBackup) or Firestreamer 4.0 (for Microsoft DPM)? If about Firestreamer-RM: In drive media mode, Firestreamer-RM connects to the first available medium. "To avoid confusion, make sure there is only one drive with a medium inside during an interacti...

Re: DPM 2010 - Detailed tape inventory failed Operation fail

Firestreamer doesn't set CHANGER_PREDISMOUNT_EJECT_REQUIRED, so it's not the same "known issue" as with IBM TotalStorage. You need to contact Microsoft Support to resolve the issue. We have no way to know what exactly causes DPM to display the error message. Generally speaking, it's OK to ...
