Firestreamer 4.0 Release Candidate

Firestreamer 4.0 is the latest, completely redesigned version of
the software. Being a tape library as opposed to a stand-alone tape
drive, the new version greatly simplifies management of backup media.

Version 3.95.9 (4.0 Release Candidate) - June 15, 2009
- ADDED: The Add Drive Media dialog.
- ADDED: The Firestreamer drivers are signed by Microsoft and produce
no warnings during installation.
- ADDED: Support for automation (scripting).
- ADDED: The help file is up to date.
Version 3.95.8 Beta - April 2, 2009
- ADDED: The Media Layout Editor.
- ADDED: The Permissions dialog.
- CHANGED: The File Media files are no longer created automatically.
Use the Media Layout Editor to create file media before loading media
into the changer.
- FIXED: When a Microsoft DPM backup operation reaches the end of
tape, the operation fails instead of continuing to the next tape.
- FIXED: Firestreamer snap-in can be used only under an administrative
account.
- FIXED: Firestreamer will not install on a computer which is not
a member of a domain.
- KNOWN ISSUE: The Add Drive Media menu item in the Media Layout Editor
is disabled.
- KNOWN ISSUE: The Media Layout Editor does not verify the media layout
before loading it into the changer. Note that the changer performs
the required validation and returns an error if the media layout
is not valid.

Version 3.95.7 Beta - March 9, 2009
- ADDED: The Current State scope node for the Firestreamer snap-in,
which displays the actual state of the Firestreamer Media Changer,
as opposed to the initial media layout displayed by the Media scope
node.
- ADDED: Automatic generation of bar codes.
- ADDED: The bar code prefix setting in the Properties dialog of the
Firestreamer scope node.
- CHANGED: It is no longer recommended to explicitly specify media
bar codes. Instead, for File Media, the bar code is automatically
extracted from the medium file name. For other types of media, the
bar code is automatically generated and can be viewed in the medium's
README.HTM file.
- KNOWN ISSUE: When a DPM backup operation reaches the end of tape,
the operation fails instead of continuing to the next tape. We are
working with Microsoft to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, please make
sure that the tapes in the changer have sufficient free space for
a whole backup.
- KNOWN ISSUE: You can only use the Firestreamer snap-in under an

- ADDED: Support for physical (non-file) media, including HDD and
optical media.
- ADDED: The ability to control data compression (see Properties for
the Firestreamer scope node in the Firestreamer snap-in).
- ADDED: A high-resolution version of the Firestreamer snap-in (Start->All
Programs->Firestreamer Media Changer).
- ADDED: Numerous enhancements to the Activity log, including more
descriptive error messages.
- CHANGED: The File Media file names, excluding the folder names and
file name extensions, must follow the bar code naming rules. The
only exception is that lower case letters are allowed.
- KNOWN ISSUE: When a DPM backup operation reaches the end of tape,

- CHANGED: The CSTest command-line utility is replaced with the Firestreamer
snap-in for Microsoft Management Console.
- CHANGED: The bar code naming rules are strictly enforced. You cannot
use lower case letters in bar codes anymore.
- FIXED: The Firestreamer Helper Service could not start because of
the digital signatures embedded into the service's executable files.
- KNOWN ISSUE: When a DPM backup operation reaches the end of tape,
the operation fails instead of continuing to the next tape. We are
working with Microsoft to resolve the issue. Meanwhile, please make
sure that the tapes in the changer have sufficient free space for
